A Plea for Music

Hello all you awesome people on my friends list!

I am in desperate need of new music. I like a lot of stuff- I'm willing to give an album several listen-to's before I dismiss it- and about the only stuff I don't like is anything overly negative or needlessly violent. Plus, poor musicianship makes me cringe (I can hear pitch fluctuations within 1/50th of a half-step).

So, any suggestions?

I could go off on a wild listing spree here, but the first band that comes to mind when you say "good musicianship" is Dream Theater, one of my all time favorite bands. It's prog (progressive) metal, but don't let the "metal" label scare you from it - it's beautiful music. The guitar player, John Petrucci, is rated as one of the best guitar players of all time (and he did a side project called Liquid Tension Experiment which is just as good Dream Theater).

On the other end of the spectrum, I'd suggest Sunny Day Real Estate, which has the unfortunate pleasure of being labeled emo sometimes. Awesome music, poetic lyrics, all around great stuff.

If you want more recommendations, pick a genre and I'll go whole hog. ;-)

I imagine that most of the metal I listen to isn't exactly up your alley, but you might enjoy Opeth's "Damnation" album. Their music is usually a blend of death metal and progressive rock, but that album consists only of progressive rock (it was actually intended as a counterpart to another, heavier album, entitled "Deliverance"). The lyrics are a certain amount of dark, but not terribly morbid or depressing, and not nearly so much as the title would suggest, at least in my opinion.

That said, their other albums could be of interest - they seem to one of the few bands of that sort which non-metal fans end up enjoying - but the heavier parts do feature growled vocals and such, which tend to be an acquired taste at best, so possibly not. There is a certain amount of violence and/or morbidity in the other albums, but its always tastefully handled, and used in order to tell a story, rather than to shock or appeal to the angsty teenbase.

Oh, and I forgot to add - their musicianship really is quite incredible, and the music is quite beautiful, despite what one might expect from labeled as "death metal".

I checked Facebook before LJ, and I left some stuff there. :D (Jack's Mannequin, Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden, Stabilo). There's more that I forgot, though. Vienna Teng- beautiful melodies (musicianship is off the charts), her voice is mesmerizing and the lyrics!

I don't know if you listened to Tori Amos back in the day (ah, the '90s. XD), but she also has some great songs- "Past the Mission," "Cornflake Girl," "Angels," "God," "Icicle," "Mother," "Winter," "Precious Things," and of course the quintessential "Silent All These Years."

Another band I've been a fan of for a few years is Alkaline Trio. They have a simple musical style (similar to Green Day, their influence), and the melodies are quick and up-beat, but the lyrics are kind of...twisted. The good kind of twisted. ;D Try "Queen of Pain" and "Warbrain" to start off, but other good ones are "Hell Yes," and "Calling All Skeletons." (Best of all, listen to "Love Love, Kiss Kiss"- it sounds as if it's sung by a passerby commenting honestly on Edward Cullen and all of his shenanigans. XD)

lol creeper shenanigans. what, in the real world, would translate into a restraining order, millions of teenage girls are taught to find flattering. If I was a mom, I'd be terrified.

I've really been liking Lamb a lot lately. She's electronica, kind of, but has a really interesting voice. I put a couple of her songs on a mix CD I sent Sarah. Also, Bela Fleck is great for writing or dreaming to... he's jazz fusion, and both jazz lovers and stoners enjoy him. He is known as one of the top banjo players in the world, and his bassist Victor Wooten has been titled the best bassist in the world for several years.
