OOOOOOOOH we´re half way there

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH! I hope you had an amazing day!

HAPPY PRE-BIRTHDAY JOSEPH! I hope tomorrow treats you well!

HAPPY BELATED 4th OF JULY!

Ahem.

So I am in La Fortuna, and tonight we are going to the hot springs to watch and see if Volcan Arenal erupts, which it does every day, but you can´t always see it because of cloud cover. Yesterday I went horseback riding for the first time ever, and my ass is more sore than... well, that would just be too graphic. But it was sweet as hell. I also fell 50 meters and swang around on a rope like Tarzan, getting props from the group because I was the only girl that didn´t scream. I said "I regret nothing!" instead. So. Freaking. Amazing. Last night, however, I didn´t sleep well because I kept on getting awakened by strange noises outside. Finally, at 1 am, I looked out at our balcony (yeah, this place was ritzy) and I saw two people climbing onto it from the balcony next door. It was a couple of guys from our group going around and looking for unlocked doors so that they could scared the shit out of all the girls (did I mention that ISV participants are 98% female? It is an estrogen extravaganza 2000, my friends). I thwarted their plans, but later in the night I woke up again because down the hall, a few times, I heard blood curdling screams. The other two girls in my room did not wake up for any of it. So, that was fun...

On Sunday we are going to Tortuguero to go kayaking through the jungle, so unless I get bored tomorrow (which will be impossible because we will be zip-lining and rapelling all day) you won´t hear from me until I return. After that, we´re going to Rio Pacuare for a 3 day white water rafting tour, which is frightening for me and my fear of water. I am excited for all of this, but still, I am excited to come home and see everyone. Which, by the way, I will be home on the 14th, not the 15th, so that´s a week from tomorrow, in case you care ;P

Oh, and hey, has anyone else ever heard that the reason moths fly towards light is because they are trying to get to the moon? I´m trying to remember where I heard that from...

Sounds awesome. Have fun in the jungle.

If I remember correctly, moths orient their flight patterns by the moon (or the sun, if they happen to be of a variety thats out then). So, yeah, they're essentially flying towards the moon, but, since its obviously too far away to reach, it functions as something to navigate by. Whereas the average light is just a bit too close, prompting them to circle around and finally into it. I think I read that in one of Robert Pirsig's books, but I might be mistaken.

It made me think of Michael Chabon's "Kavalier and Clay," but that might be a misreference on my part. It sounds like you're having a really awesome time! I can't wait to see pictures and stuff!

yeah, moths use the moon as a static object to navigate by (like sailors use the stars). you might have heard that from me, i throw it out from time to time. :)
