Last night we went to see His Dark Materials, Part 1 at the Oxford Playhouse. I was curious to see how they'd pull it off at such a small venue, having seen it back in 2004 at the National Theatre which is has such amazing technical capacity, rotating stage sections, pieces that rise above and fall below the stage floor, etc. It was put on by an entirely different company, but it was still really good. That is what makes theatre, I dare say, better than cinema- each time you see a play it's a new experience, whereas each time you see a movie it's the same exact thing. The puppets were way different, and of course the actors brought new slants to the roles they played (no one is as good as Timothy Dalton for Lord Asriel though! Or Sam Elliot for Lee Scoresby, for that matter). But it was wonderful just to see the characters come to life again.

Plus, Philip Pullman (since he lives in Oxford) came out at the end for a bow :)

Did I mention I got his autograph last Friday? Hells yes I did. I went to see him speak at the same theatre, and you know what? He further confirmed that creative writing courses are only helpful for people who are afraid to write on their own. Then I got his autograph in my moleskine and on my ticket stub :) He spelled my name wrong, but that's okay. I've never been a person with a hero, but if I had to choose he'd be the one. So, you can imagine how ecstatic I still am to have met him!

What else... tonight is May Eve, and in true Oxford tradition we'll be going out aaaaall night tonight, hitting up the pubs and having a rowdy time. At 5 am there will be singing atop the Magdalene Tower, Oxford students trying to jump off the bridge, and Morris dancers. Followed by breakfast at a pub. Followed by a nap, followed by me finishing my video final project. Followed by more napping. :P

Also, it looks like I'll be spending a week backpacking in Scotland at the end of May! We were originally thinking Athens, but it's less expensive to go to Scotland (which means we'd have more money to spend!), plus Becky and I both have Scottish heritage, and we'd get to take a train which is pretty awesome. Also, I will finally get to check off "Roll down a hill in Scotland" from my Life List. ;D

Oh, and my official return date/time to Buffalo:

June 3rd, 2009 4:55 pm!

Life is good (because I finally got to write again yesterday afternoon)!!!
