Last night we went to see His Dark Materials, Part 1 at the Oxford Playhouse. I was curious to see how they'd pull it off at such a small venue, having seen it back in 2004 at the National Theatre which is has such amazing technical capacity, rotating stage sections, pieces that rise above and fall below the stage floor, etc. It was put on by an entirely different company, but it was still really good. That is what makes theatre, I dare say, better than cinema- each time you see a play it's a new experience, whereas each time you see a movie it's the same exact thing. The puppets were way different, and of course the actors brought new slants to the roles they played (no one is as good as Timothy Dalton for Lord Asriel though! Or Sam Elliot for Lee Scoresby, for that matter). But it was wonderful just to see the characters come to life again.

Plus, Philip Pullman (since he lives in Oxford) came out at the end for a bow :)

Did I mention I got his autograph last Friday? Hells yes I did. I went to see him speak at the same theatre, and you know what? He further confirmed that creative writing courses are only helpful for people who are afraid to write on their own. Then I got his autograph in my moleskine and on my ticket stub :) He spelled my name wrong, but that's okay. I've never been a person with a hero, but if I had to choose he'd be the one. So, you can imagine how ecstatic I still am to have met him!

What else... tonight is May Eve, and in true Oxford tradition we'll be going out aaaaall night tonight, hitting up the pubs and having a rowdy time. At 5 am there will be singing atop the Magdalene Tower, Oxford students trying to jump off the bridge, and Morris dancers. Followed by breakfast at a pub. Followed by a nap, followed by me finishing my video final project. Followed by more napping. :P

Also, it looks like I'll be spending a week backpacking in Scotland at the end of May! We were originally thinking Athens, but it's less expensive to go to Scotland (which means we'd have more money to spend!), plus Becky and I both have Scottish heritage, and we'd get to take a train which is pretty awesome. Also, I will finally get to check off "Roll down a hill in Scotland" from my Life List. ;D

Oh, and my official return date/time to Buffalo:

June 3rd, 2009 4:55 pm!

Life is good (because I finally got to write again yesterday afternoon)!!!

I forgot to mention this after the walking tour of Oxford, but this is Oxford's May Day tradition:

-the night before, all the college students drink (surprise!)
-all night long. It's the only night of the year the pubs are open all night.

"May Morning"
- the Magdalen College Choir ascends to the top of Magdalen Tower, and sings a hymn, the Hymnus Eucharisticus
- all the people gather below and listen
- the (very drunk) college students try to jump off the Magdalen bridge, into a shallow creek
- festivities ensue

I am SO excited for this. ;D

Plus, I'm hoping the novelty of this poster that I'm going to pick up tomorrow will encourage my friends here to go to more pubs and less clubs (hey that rhymes!). One of my brother's friends told me about it. Did I mention Aaron and two of his friends from London came to visit yesterday? They did, and it was fun. We "did a crime" as he said by not putting money in the donation box when we toured Magdalen college. Karmically I paid though, because my little point-n-shoot camera promptly stopped working, so no pictures until Aaron's friends send them along.

And for your enrichment, the Oxford instances of "Magdalen" are for some reason pronounced "maudlin." It's probably Gaelic or something.

Yay, already in a better mood!

Happy May Day/Beltane/Bealtane!

This is an excellent time for creativity and manifestation, as it's not only a holiday honoring and celebrating fertility, but we're also in the early waxing phase of the moon. yay! (<-- this has been my battle cry for the past week. I'm in a really good mood lately, if you couldn't tell)

I came up with another plot point for My Books that I'm fairly certain must be take place but I just don't know where when or how. I know who and what and why. I need to kill a 17-year-old girl because she has to prove that it's possible to defeat destiny, but act as an impetus for finding ways to defeat destiny besides death. How will she die? Not suicide. I want to make it honorable, but preventable. She's kind of an arrogant brat, but her heart is in the right place.
Oh to play god...

I have a feeling these books are going to get a whole lot more violent by the time I finish writing them. Then I'll be all "what happened? I thought I was going for PG?" Naw, threw that out the window when I added pirates.

speaking of books... I should get to writing mine! I have to make kugel later, so I should use my time efficiently now. I'm a little stuck on how to reveal the traitor right now... but it'll come to me.

:D
