Have you looked into independent publishers? There are a lot out there. An old professor of mine has actually been published by one. I'll get the name of it for you if you are interested in it.
Self Publishing isn't an impossible task but is a lot of work. Definitely talk to other writers who have self published. That way you can get an idea of the dos and don'ts.
