yay for scary german movies
Apr. 14th, 2006 09:02 pmso I'm watching this movie, Tears of Kali, that's all about scary "self discovery" groups in india or something... and there's lots of crazy ghost stuff and "energy manifestations" and lights are flickering and people are skinning themselves and cutting off eyelids and being attacked by crazy entities... and then my smoke alarm goes off- not mine, really, i don't have one, but the one in the hall and in the basement.
YIKES
Scared the crap out of me.
But, see, beyond the initial shock, I then think: "Smoke detector... fire?" but, no smoke. no flames. Being a tenant, I call my landlord, who says he'll be out here in an HOUR. An hour? Fuck that shit. I called the fire department.
Excitement! Picture it: shy lil' ol' Maddie, all alone, standing by her car with The Bean in a carrying crate, surrounded by fire trucks, all the neighbors standing outside gawking... At least I know if there HAD been a fire they would have come prepared. But there was no fire, thank goodness. They pulled the power supply on the alarm and now it's quiet again.
Meanwhile, Dean, the landlord, was on his way. I, being generally spiteful, considering he never bothered to turn the lights on in my hall and yelled at my mom and has been a jerk to me since I moved in, thought "I'll let him drive all the way out here only to discover the emergency has passed and there's no need for him (useless as he is)." BUT then I thought, "gee, that's not nice. I'll call him and let him know there's no rush, and he can come check the wiring tomorrow."
So I called him, and he said "well, I just picked up the keys so I'll come over anyway and check the electricity."
and NOW...
I have a light in my hall! YAY no more fumbling with keys in the dark and tripping up and down the stairs!
See? It pays off to be passive and nice. I never got too bothered by the lack of lights, it was more just when I was in the dark that it bugged me. But everyone else has been all "call! yell! get frustrated and mad!" and while I'm a pro at frustration and anger, I pick my battles carefully. I don't get frustrated about that kind of stuff. I get frustrated about not being able to know the future and exactly what choices I should make. You know, practical things ;P
But I have lights in my hall!!! YAY!
