I've gotta get this off my chest because I can't stand to watch another commercial for osteoporosis that tells you to "DRINK MILK FOR STRONG BONES!"
Listen. Just... just listen:
1) Nations with the highest rates of bone disease are the ones consuming the greatest amounts of milk and dairy products.
2)Too much milk protein creates an acid-condition in the bloodstream which must be neutralized. The body does so by leeching calcium out of the bones. Yeah, so, even if you do absorb any of that COW calcium, you lose it anyway.
3) In order for calcium to be absorbed by the body an equal amount of magnesium must be present. Dairy products may be high in calcium, but they have very little magnesium, whereas the less profitable industry of leafy and dark green vegetables has calcium and magnesium in just the right amount for your body to be able to absorb them.
4) The reason dairy is pushed so much as being an excellent source of calcium is because the FDA is as corrupt as any other government office. Reps from the dairy, grain, and other industries pay them off. That's the real reason why the food pyramid ever changes.
5) The "scientific" reason dairy is pushed is because milk comes from cows and cows have incredibly strong bones because they need to hold all that weight (much like the modern day american). But use your soft tasty brain: COWS GET STRONG BONES FROM DRINKING COW'S MILK AT INFANCY BECAUSE THEY ARE COWS. They are supposed to be able to digest their mother's milk and break down the enzymes and incorporate the nutrients into their bodies. Then, they proceed to eat grass (what's that? a dark leafy green?) But, COWS are DIFFERENT from US. (ex: They have TWO stomachs.) We, on the other hand, do not get strong bones from drinking cow's milk, especially not if we drink it for our entire lives. Does it seem odd to you that we are the only mammals that drink milk after infancy? Does it seem odd to you that we are the only mammals that drink another mammal's milk, even past the point where milk is necessary to our diets?
Does it seem odd to you that milk, a poor source of calcium for humans, costs more and is desired in greater quantities on the food pyramid than vegetables?

ok. there.

please don't listen to the FDA. They approved Vioxx.
